These are a few of the lucky ones.
Each of these magnificent horses is a success story. Each of them was spared the horrific trauma of a ride in a dangerously overcrowded stock trailer without food or water to a overcrowded holding pen at a slaughter house. With your support - your faxes and phone calls to your Senators and Representatives - we have successfully closed the last slaughter plant in the United States on June 29, 2007.
But the fight is not over. Right now, our country's excess horses...horses no one wants...horses that people may think are going to "good homes"...horses that are healthy and viable and young...are headed to either Mexico or Canada from America's auctions. Why are they being shipped there? Canada and Mexico are still actively slaughtering our horses for human consumption overseas. While our slaughter plants have closed, our auctions have not and neither have our borders. While our legislators have heard our plea and responded by shutting down the three U.S. slaughter plants, they still allow our horses to be shipped out of this country every day to be slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. The killer buyers still have a job, and are still making a good living taking someone's family pet out of our country to die. And while death in an American slaughter house was one of the most horrifying ways to die, death at a Mexican slaughter house is worse than barbaric. If you wish to learn how unconscionable this practice can be outside of our country, you may link to out page "Anti Slaughter Update" and read the about the progress of our anti slaughter legislation. There is a warning posted prior to the information about Mexican slaughter plants. The story is graphic, and will make you thank God your horses are safe in your barn.
There will be thousands of horses in this country this year that don't get the second chance these ones did. They will either be sold to dealers, taken to an auction or sold directly to a known killer buyer. Their fate is the same - a frightening, dangerous ride to the slaughterhouse in a trailer that was already too full when they got on, an even more frightening wait for the inevitable...

...and say a prayer that by the end of this year, America's horses will be safe from slaughter anywhere.

It had just stopped raining and I let everyone out. It rained one more time for about ten minutes, and then of course, everyone (well, almost everyone) decided it was time to roll! I caught a few of them before they hit the ground :-)
