The stallion no one would take

Buddy came to us from a loving owner who had to let him go.  Their family situation had changed.  The property on Long Island that Buddy had called home for twelve years was being sold and there was nowhere for him to go.  He was a 15 year old stallion at  and everyone Lauren asked for help told her, "He won't socialize, "He won't adapt, "Best thing to do is either get rid of him or put him down".

Bright Futures Farm was Lauren's last resort.  No one wanted an older stallion - no matter how laid back she said he was.  Even "rescues" turned her away.  They told her they wouldn't take a stallion.   Lauren called me desperate for a solution, but almost convinced his only fate was death.  Without hesitation I told her we'd take him.  Buddy has a wonderful personality, and was very well mannered when he arrived. Until now, he'd lived alone - a Great Dane was his companion.  Buddy hopped off the trailer and saw five faces staring at him over the fence.  Anyone could see by the look on his face that he was elated to see other horses so close to him.

Socialization was slow, but he made progress every day.   I consulted with Dr. Meagher at OSU about gelding an older horse and he agreed to operate on  Buddy at Galbreath Equine Center in Columbus.  Buddy transitioned into the herd, and we were soon riding him.  He is now in a loving home and has a wonderful life to look forward to.

# 471.    SOLD!    To Bruce Rotz.

"I found Fencer at the New Holland Sales Barn.  Painfully thin, with a huge hematoma on his right chest, Fencer was standing in a small pen with a goat awaiting his turn at the hand of the auctioneer.  He trembled, and as soon as our eyes met, I knew he had a home with us."

"I also knew what fate awaited him if I didn't take him.  He was a stallion.  The grey hairs haphazardly scattered about his muzzle told me he'd be considered useless to most people. If he'd have been there any other day it would have meant a frightening ordeal beginning around 5:00 and ending three to six days later at a slaughter house."  But fate stepped in. Fencer had an angel that day.  Many others weren't lucky.

He went through the ring unnoticed.  Five minutes, and it was all over. He didn't turn heads, no one saw any value in him.  He was old, skinny and deformed.  One bid for $75 and the gavel echoed through the building.  A few minutes later he was standing in the same spot, but facing the aisle this time.   The number on his hip had a red "X" across it.  Sold.

What I'll never understand is that the man sent him to an auction known to be frequented by killer buyers.  But yet, he trimmed his ears and bridle path, groomed him, trimmed his feet and bought him a new halter (the tag was still on it).  He must have been hoping that by dressing him up that someone other than the slaughter buyers would buy him.  That didn't happen.  He was sold to a slaughter buyer.  "We actually had to pay that horrible man more than he paid for Fencer in order to save his life."  Fencer never has to worry again.

The link below is a video that two young sisters made after they accidentally found a video of horse slaughter on the internet.  This is "one of those many reasons" why we need your help.  The practice has to end, and when it does, we need to have the space and funding to take some of the excess horses.
