Well, Debby, you did. Debby did everything wrong. Debby arrived two hours late to pick him up. When she got to Memphis, it was already dark. The barn owner offered to turn more lights on so that Alegre could see inside the trailer rather than be expected to walk into a dark cave. She refused the additional lighting. She said she longed him prior to attempting to load him. She then attempted to load him and he wasn't ready. She was impatient, so she continued to attempt to load him. When he pulled back and broke the first halter, she should have either stopped and let him relax or ask someone whom the horse knew for assistance, or simply put him in the barn for awhile. Instead she put a new halter on him and pushed him to the point that he broke that one too.
She told me more than once "He was fightin' with me. He was fightin' with me." A horse doesn't "fight with you". A horse tried to flee from his fear. The only one "fighting" in this situation was Debby K. OHearon. She was attempting to pick a fight she could never win. Once he broke the second halter, she decided that if she used a longe line and tied it onto his halter in a knot, and tied it inside the trailer in a knot, she'd "teach" him that when he pulled back it wouldn't give, but if he'd step forward, it would.
First of all, you don't aggravate an already agitated horse. You don't tie him with a knot that won't release. You don't push him when he's already nervous and needs reassurance instead. She told everyone around her that she wanted to do this alone. They respected her wishes. When the barn owner saw the knots she said that they would do it differently and asked Debby if she needed help. Debby replied "No. I know what I'm doing." Well, Debby...you DIDN'T. You had no freakin clue what you were doing. And, your negligence is what caused Alegre's untimely death.
Debby knew she was at fault. She apologized to everyone around her and told them she'd take care of his burial. She called me and told me she'd take care of his burial. She obviously had no intention of taking care of his burial or anything else. The day after this happened, she canceled her paypal payment to Bright Futures Farm for his adoption fee. The money isn't important to me. The message she sent to all of us through that action is though. She has yet to pay the undertaker who buried Alegre for his former owner who is devastated. Debby K. OHearon will not reply to phone calls or emails regarding her obligation to pay this bill.
While I know that Debby K. OHearon did not set out to kill Alegre, Debby OHearon was negligent, lacking in knowledge as to how to properly handle an agitated horse, let alone attempt to load an agitated horse. That in itself could have been remedied if she had been willing to accept help from someone who not only knew the horse but was knowledgeable in loading a horse that was upset.
Debby K. OHearon who was selfish and irresponsible and her actions coupled with her refusal to accept help resulted in the painful death of an innocent animal. SHAME ON YOU, DEBBY OHEARON. It isn't enough that she acted irresponsibly, but now she refuses to pay the bill to provide this horse with a proper resting place. A bill that is rightfully hers and hers alone. Do the right thing, Debby. Pay the undertaker.
Oh, and by the way, Debby said she volunteers for a rescue/humane society in TN run by someone named "Doc". I hope he doesn't let her load any more horses for them.
