Bright Futures Farm is a sanctuary for retired Thoroughbreds.  We find homes for many horses that have the potential for a new career as a trail horse or family pleasure mount.   Our focus is to save as many horses as we can before  they are faced with neglect or auction.

We are always in need of foster homes.  When you foster a horse you help us save one more from harm.  Fostering expenses are tax-deductible.  If you have room, please ask us about our foster program.

Becky

1995 Standardbred mare.  15.3 hands.  Chestnut., star.

Becky has a pleasant personality and enjoys attention. She is a tremendous driving horse, and can be driven by a novice driver. She has beautiful gaits, and a smooth transition between. She's an uncomplicated driver and has been started under saddle. Becky shows promise as a trail, pleasure or Western horse. Right now, she can easily be ridden by a confident novice in the ring or intermediate on trails. Becky has a temperament suitable for most riders, and a good work ethic. With continued, appropriate schooling, Becky could develop into a solid competitive mount.  The photos of her under saddle...that is literally her first day under saddle! She's willing very sweet and quite honest.  She'll make a wonderful trail horse or pleasure mount and could easily go into the show ring in western classes.

RESPONDS TO: Voice, hand, leg.

RIDER/HANDLER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   Novice with supervision/intermediate.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Pleasure,4-H, Trails, show.

Becky found a great home with a V. Dodd's in AL

Distinct Power (Power)

(Wolf Power (SAF) - Indistinctly [Vaguely Noble (IRE)])

1996 Thoroughbred gelding.  16.3 hands. Bay. Star, LH sock.

Power raced for six years, then lost his eye due to an injury in a turf race.  He had the appropriate time off and then continued racing.  Power is laid back, and very aware of his limitation.  He is a horse that is very easy to ride, willing to learn, and has an excellent work ethic.  He's, simply put, a great horse!  Power has had some time under saddle with a professional trainer and can be easily ridden by an amateur or junior with the appropriate trainer supervision.  He can easily be ridden by a confident intermediate level rider with the schooling he's had to date.  Power has tremendous natural movement and floats across the ground.  His movement and conformation indicate he'd be a wonderful Dressage prospect.  He's got a superb disposition and he is suitable for most riders.  The loss of his eye may only limit him in the world of competitive jumping.  He's been desensitized to many sounds, objects and movements.  Not much appears to bother him as long as he trusts you to be his "eye" (be aware of narrow openings on his left, give him a lot of verbal encouragement when riding, allow him freedom to move his head to see, etc.).  Power is a tremendous horse ready to move on to a specialized discipline.  With the appropriate continued schooling, Power has great potential.

RESPONDS TO: Voice, leg, hands.  Needs practice on all before reschooling for a particular discipline.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   Intermediate or confident junior with appropriate supervision.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Dressage, EP, Show, Trails.

Power's placement fee is $650

Power is being fostered and reschooled by R. Myers & M. Thompson of OH

Domingo"

1982 Quarter Horse gelding.  15 hands. Palomino.

Domingo has taught many many youngsters to ride over the last ten years.  He's pretty much bomb proof, easy going, loves attention, and is beautiful to boot!  Due to arthritis, he is retiring from his lesson programs and needs a new home where he will be doted over and not ridden often.  He would be suited to occasional lead line or a light walk by a light weight child in the backyard.  He can easily be ridden by a beginner with no trouble.  He will need to be placed on a supplement of glucosamine/chondroitin, and devils claw.

RESPONDS TO: Voice, leg, hands, weight.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   True beginner.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  lead line, light rider at walk occasionally.

Domingo is being fostered by G. & D. Murdick of PA

Domingo passed away in March 2008

Favorite Moment. "Little"

(Favorite Trick - Nona's Moment)

2001 Thoroughbred gelding.  15.3 hands. Bay.  star, two socks.

Little came off the track with a hairline fracture to two sesamoid bones in his LF ankle.  He's had two years off and is now sound for pleasure and trail riding.  The photos of Little under saddle are his "first ride" since retiring from racing.  He's VERY laid back, easy to get along with, listens well and enjoys trails.  He isn't "spooky" and could easily be ridden by a novice in an arena.  This is a horse, that with a little bit more schooling, could be a great addition to a therapy program...he's that laid back.

RESPONDS TO: voice, legs, hands.  Needs practice on all.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   Novice with supervision.  Intermediate on trails.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Pleasure, trails, flatwork, hacking, show.

Little's placement fee is $400

Little needs a foster or permanent home ASAP.

The second of four horses we have thirty days to place.  Please help us by adopting or fostering Little for us.

Find The  Mine. "Miner"

(Geiger Counter - Indistinctly (Danzig))

1995 Thoroughbred gelding.  15.3 hands. Chestnut.  stripe, two socks.

MIner, who won over $250,000 in his career, retired sound.  He's now ready for a new career and has the potential to do anything he enjoys.  He is currently turned out alone, and has been for the past ten years when he's been away from the track, so he'll need a home where he can be separated from other horses and SLOWLY transitioned into a herd environment again.  He will need ground schooling, desensitization schooling, and then schooling under saddle for a particular discipline.  He's flashy, curious, intelligent and has a very kind eye.  Once he has more turnout and can wind down, he's going to be relatively easy to work with.

RESPONDS TO: leg, hands.  Schooled to race.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   Advanced Intermediate.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Pleasure, trails, flatwork, jumping, Dressage, show.

Hallie  Super little mare!   ADOPTED 11-23-07

~2000-2002 black Percheron-cross mare.  ~14.3 hands. Blaze, RH sock.

Hallie is a lovely mare.  She has a wonderful personality, and enjoys attention.  She's been ridden several times since our friends, Rick and Mindy rescued her.  Hallie will stand to mount and dismount.  She will stand for vet and farrier and will  walk, trot & whoa on cue.  Her trot is very smooth and quite comfortable to sit.  When we saw her yesterday (9-29-07), she had not been ridden for approximately a year.  She needs to develop a work ethic, and based upon our evaluation of her yesterday, we estimate she can be easily ridden by a novice rider after ~30 days of saddle time and some additional schooling on cues.  She'll need some work on her front feet.  Her hoof walls will need to grow a bit, she'll need a shorter toe, and slight bit more heel.  Backs are fine.  When we acquired her, she had foundered slightly in the LF (only 3 degrees).   She's currently sound barefoot (Mindy rode her barefoot yesterday).  She may benefit from the mustang trim, or you may wish to put front shoes on her to finish her schooling and do any type of trail riding.

RESPONDS TO: Voice, leg, hands, weight.  Needs some work on all.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:   Confident novice with appropriate supervision in ring, intermediate to finish schooling.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Pleasure, trails, flatwork, driving.

Hallie's placement fee is $800

Hallie has been adopted by C. Oleski and S. Moczulski of PA

Homer

1996 chestnut Thoroughbred gelding..16 hands. small star.

Homer is a very nice horse who is relatively well schooled.  He's been ridden english and western, knows his cues pretty well, and seems to enjoy trail riding with a CONFIDENT rider with a RELAXED seat.  If you are a timid rider, HOmer is not the horse for you.  If you are a confident intermediate level rider, he is a great horse to ride and a great "buddy" to have in your barn.

We thought Homer found his forever home in TN earlier this year.  However, the woman's situation was not as stable as we had thought, she has since decided to move back to her old home state and has given us until the third week in January to find new homes for four horses in a market that is already flooded.

Homer is going to be fostered by Kira S.

Thank you Kira!

Im No Square "Square"

(Square Your Hat - )

~1989 Chestnut Thoroughbred gelding.  15.3 hands. Star, blaze, LH sock, RH stocking.

Square retired from racing a number of years ago and has been cared for by his owner since retiring.  He has not been reschooled for any discipline.  He's been a family pet.  Although he's been off the track for several years, he is considered to have the attitude and energy level of a recent OTTB, and therefore, Square would be most suited to an intermediate level handler and an experienced rider at this time.  If you are simply looking for a companion horse for a lone horse, he would be a perfect choice.  If you are interested in riding, he will need reschooled starting with ground training. Square is sound and has been pampered for most of his adult life.  He could be reschooled for flatwork or pleasure by an experienced instructor with minimal effort.

Square needs a foster home

He is located in WV

Jiminy Cricket. "Titan"     BEGINNER'S HORSE!

~1987 seal bay pony. 14 hands.

Titan is finished English, has done lessons, shows, jumped, and trail rides.  He is very sweet, loves attention, and is a wonderful teacher. He would be a perfect "first horse" for a beginner with appropriate supervision in an arena setting.  He is still a guy who likes to "go" when asked, so if you want to canter, the riders should have a bit more experience and a good seat.  Titan is very responsive to his rider, and he's also a very careful pony.  He can no longer jump competitively due to some arthritis in his right shoulder, so his work load should consist of light riding, light trail riding, flatwork, lessons.   Titan has lost sight in his left eye but it does not bother him or limit his ability at all.  Titan has spent several days with me at our main farm, and he is one super little pony!  If you are looking for a small horse/pony...this is the guy!

RESPONDS TO: Voice, hands, legs, weight.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner with supervision, amateur/novice trails.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Trails, pleasure, ring work, light lessons.

Titan's placement fee is $550

Lady

1995 bay Standardbred mare. 15.2  hands. No markings.

Lady was a winner at the track and retired sound.  She's very sweet, loves people, wants to please and has no vices.  She needs ground school and transitioned under saddle for pleasure riding.  She has had a rider on her back several times without incident, and while she doesn't understand what is expected of her, she's very sensible and willing to learn.  With minimal schooling, a novice should be able to ride her with supervision.  She's got the personality that tells us that once re-schooled, almost anyone would be able to ride her.  She's an easy driver, and responds to a light touch of the reins.  She does have moon blindness in her left eye, and while she has lost some sight in that eye, she can still easily see objects.  She's not easily spooked and therefore, the loss of sight does not appear to be an issue for her.

RESPONDS TO: Voice, hands.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate now.  Needs to complete re-schooling.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:  Trails, Western Pleasure, English disciplines, youth, 4-H.

Lady's placement fee is $300

Mystical Bullet. "Bullet"    NOVICE WITH SUPERVISION

(Buckfinder - Mystical Star)

1991 dark brown/bay Thoroughbred gelding.  16 hands.

Bullet was adopted several years ago by a wonderful family, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they regretfully asked us to find him a new home.  His previous family would easily ride him through the fields, around the yard, and I believe he was also ridden at a training facility by them.  Both mother, and daughter (10 years old now) rode him without any problem.

UPDATE 11/03/07:  Bullet is a PLEASURE to ride.  He's laid back, stands to mount and dismount.  Good brakes.  Great "whoa".  He needs work on understanding a cue as soon as it's given, but he yields to leg, rein and weight quite well.  Ears are always forward, eye is always soft.  Very attentive.  Very easy going.  Has been ridden English. Not much bothers him.  Great trail, pleasure horse.

RESPONDS TO: Voice. legs, hands, weight.  Needs work on cueing.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:  Confident novice w/supervision.  Intermediate on trails.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:   Trails, pleasure, flatwork.

Placement fee: $650

Pronanza's Luck "Woody"   NOVICE WITH SUPERVISION

(The Promoter - Coy's Pacific Anza)

1989 sorrel Quarter Horse gelding.  15.3 hands.

Woody is very well schooled as a Western Pleasure horse.  He has done 4-H, pleasure classes, w/t/c/, and has won many ribbons in the show ring.  He is a good trail horse and a fun horse to play around with in the back yard since he knows so much.  He could go into the show ring for WP, or w/t/c/ with a novice rider.  He has a tremendous personality too.  Very smart.  Loves attention.  He does need another horse around for companionship...cannot be a "lone" horse.

RESPONDS TO: Voice. legs, hands, weight.  Woody is a "finished" horse.

RIDER EXPERIENCE LEVEL:  Confident novice w/supervision.  Intermediate on trails.

POTENTIAL DISCIPLINES:   Trails, pleasure, flatwork, WP, w/t/c/.

Placement fee is $550

Shaiman

1975 bay Arabian stallion. 14.2 hands.  Star.

Shaiman is a 32 year old Egyptian Arabian stallion.

He was being boarded by  his owner, but she has encountered financial difficulty in keeping him and has asked us for help.

10-25-07  ***AT RISK***  One week to find him a home!

11-05-07:  ***SAFE*** Thanks to FOB's!

Our Economy has forced many of us to make changes in how we live.  It has forced many people to make heart-wrenching decisions about their four legged friends that they dearly love.  Shaiman's owner rescued him twelve years ago and thought he'd be with her the rest of his life.  She has now asked us to help keep him safe the remainder of his years...which we hope are many more.  The stable he had been living at (10-23-07) gave her one week to move him or they would ship him "down the road".  We have found a stable to board him (Thank you Sue & Richard at Horse Feathers).  Board is $200 per month and includes a 12X12 stall and separate turnout daily.

We need pledges to keep this guy safe and we will eventually need a permanent  foster home for him.

He is easy to handle, loves to be groomed and prefers women to men.  He cannot be gelded - due to age and risk.  He cannot be bred.

If you can make a contribution - one time or monthly - toward temporary care at Horse Feathers Farm in NY, please send your contribution to our paypal or mailing address:

paypal:  bdee@brightfuturesfarm.org

mail:  Bright Futures Farm, 44793 Harrison Road, Spartansburg, PA  16434.

He's a healthy 32 year old boy.  He deserves to live out the rest of his life in safety.
