Foster a Horse

Program

The number of horse owners who can no longer keep and care for their horses is growing by leaps and bounds.  At least once every other day I receive  either a phone call or an email or a fax from someone who desperately needs to find a new home for their horse.  Many of them are trainers at race tracks who have horses that can no longer race, and don’t want to see them go to an auction, knowing what their ultimate fate usually will be.  Many of them are individuals like you who are in a situation whereby they can no longer keep the horse they’ve grown to love and think of as a member of their family.

Every horse we have placed into a new home, and every horse you see on our page of horses currently available is a horse that was in need at some point.   They are magnificent, viable animals with so much potential and so much to give.  How can we turn them away?

I am reaching out to you to help us help the horses.  In many situations, if we don’t take the horse, the owner has no other choice but to send it to a sale.  At that point, if the horse is purchased by an individual, it is no longer traceable, able to easily fall through the cracks, most likely never to be found again if that individual doesn't keep it for the remainder of it's life.  And, we can only hope that it has a good life.  Most people will truly never know, unless they meet the buyer and stay in touch, which rarely happens.   However, most of the horses sent to an auction are not purchased by individuals.  Many of them – good, sound, viable horses – are purchased by middlemen for slaughter houses.  Did you know that there are two of them in the United States that are fully operational and process horsemeat daily?  The horses that do not go to these operations are shipped to Canada to one of at least six other operations.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We need your help now.  We are full, and we have a waiting list of horses that need to come into our program.  Most of these horses cannot wait for an opening.  They need to be moved NOW.  They are in situations where the owners cannot afford to keep them where they are.

Do you have a run in shed in a pasture that has room for one more??

Do you have a barn with one, or two empty stalls that you could spare??

If every person who reads this page that has room for just one more horse were to contact us we would never have to say "no" (and thank goodness we've never had to yet) would be solved.

We need temporary shelters for these horses to ensure that they don’t meet an unnecessary end to their lives.

Can you take just one horse for a few months?   We are a registered charity, and by becoming a foster farm, all of the expenses you incur associated with the care of one of our horses may be tax deductible.  You would be making a grand contribution to our organization, and to the life of one of these magnificent animals.  You’d be making a true difference in the life of a horse in need.

Note :  When "fostering" you are helping a horse in immediate need.  In most cases, you cannot "choose" the horse you wish to foster.  You are helping a horse that at that moment has nowhere else to go.  Please keep that in mind.  The horses that are at our farm already do not need to be fostered.  It is the horses that are waiting to come here that do.
