Bright Futures Farm is an equine charity whose primary focus is re-homing off the track Thoroughbreds...horses that can no longer race due to disinterest or injury…horses unwanted by their owners and sent to auction where most are purchased for slaughter.  Our dedication has grown to include providing sanctuary for older horses that are unwanted after their "useful years" are over, including older stallions that cannot be gelded due to the risk of complications.

We are always in need of foster homes.  When you foster a horse you help us save one more from harm.  Fostering expenses are tax-deductible.  If you have room, please ask us about our foster program.

Independence Day Save at Sugarcreek!

July 3, 2009

Four pregnant Thoroughbred mares were sent somewhere two Monday's ago with a known dealer. There was a chance they could be at Sugarcreek, OH auction this week...slim chance, but we had to try to get them if there was still time. This was a planned collective effort by many FOB's.  One of us, who lives near Sugarcreek, chose the less than favorable task of going there to see if they could be found, then buy their safety.

Sadly, she did not find the mares.  However, through an amazing last minute fundraising effort, literally starting at 11 am yesterday  morning, we were able to rescue three wonderful souls from a fate no horse should face.  Thanks to Rachael, an individual stepped in, again, last minute, and offered temporary safe haven for them, sight unseen.  Another wonderful woman, Mona, offered free transport and dropped whatever she'd planned for yesterday to transport whomever we saved to safety.

Lori had the toughest job of all.  I've been in her shoes.  It's heart-wrenching to have to choose who you know will live and who you leave behind.  Lori chose three beautiful souls.  Two had kindness and confusion in their eyes.  The third was curious, and wary...possibly due to former abuse, possibly due to not having been handled much.

And, finally, Amanda spearheaded the effort!

Meet the three Faces of Freedom:

16 yo Standardbred gelding. Very sweet.

Yearling colt.  Very sweet.

Young Belgian gelding. Wary, but curious.

Belgian gelding has a home with Tidbit342000.  Thank you!

Thank you to Maureen830, Tschwart1, Kmarchman, JudithinCA, mskittyhese, jcb88, tidbit342000 for your generous contribution toward their bail.

Thank you to gal12311, Rachael, Mona, Lori and our foster home, for jumping right in and getting this save accomplished!  Great idea, gal12311 to save someone else, since we couldn't find the mares.

A fantastic group effort yesterday headed by gal12311!
