Bright Futures Farm is an equine charity whose primary focus is re-homing off the track Thoroughbreds...horses that can no longer race due to disinterest or injury…horses unwanted by their owners and sent to auction where most are purchased for slaughter.  Our dedication has grown to include providing sanctuary for older horses that are unwanted after their "useful years" are over, including older stallions that cannot be gelded due to the risk of complications.

We are always in need of foster homes.  When you foster a horse you help us save one more from harm.  Fostering expenses are tax-deductible.  If you have room, please ask us about our foster program.

Always Loved & Never Forgotten

Shifter

1983 - 27 September 2009

Shifter taught me patience and creativity.

Shifter had the constitution of a Sherman Tank.  I often thought I should provide in my will for him, as I thought there was a good chance he'd outlive me.  I had eight wonderful years with him. He was never sick once.  He pretended he disliked attention and would usually scoff at me when I offered it.  He loved carrots and oatmeal treats.  He was, and always will be our self-proclaimed Patriarch.  He was frequently intentionally obstinate just to see what I'd say.  If I could be one step ahead of him and make him think that what I wanted him to do was his idea...it was done in the blink of an eye.  If he, for the slightest moment, felt it was my idea...sometimes it happened.  But, more often than not it didn't.  And that was fine.  That was Shifter.

Shifter choked on 9/19.  He never presented any clinical signs of pleural pneumonia until the night I brought him home from the hospital...one week later.  That, also, was Shifter.....strong.

Rest in Peace, my dearest friend.  Now you can run again with Brenda and love her as you had done here.

Thank you, Claudia...for being Shifter's long distance friend & sponsor for the past six years.

I Need A Lover (Brenda)

Brenda taught me courage, and strength.
