Bright Futures Farm is a sanctuary for retired Thoroughbreds.  We find homes for many horses that have the potential for a new career as a trail horse or family pleasure mount.   Our focus is to save as many horses as we can before  they are faced with neglect or auction.

We are always in need of foster homes.  When you foster a horse you help us save one more from harm.  Fostering expenses are tax-deductible.  If you have room, please ask us about our foster program.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS

To see our adopted horses, available horses (to adopt) and other horses available please choose a button below:

Horses in our sanctuary are older horses that we have either rescued or have been asked to care for.  These horses are permanently retired here.

Our Permanent Residents need sponsors.  Each horse has specific dietary requirements and each has special supplement needs.

Please consider sponsoring one of our permanent retirees.  We are thrilled to have them here and each one has already taught us a great deal.   They are wonderful old folk with a lot of wisdom to give and a lot of life left to live.

Accountability (Tiny)

(Steady Special - Key Account (by Keystoner))

Registered Standardbred mare.  13.3 hands. Bay. No markings.

Birth date: 04/25/1977

Tiny was foaled at the farm of John Colvin in Dayton, TN.  She was purchased as a yearling by John P. Brockelhurst and his brother Paul R.  She was tattooed in anticipation of being raced, and may have.  She was purchased by Lee Mayo at age 4 in April 1980.  She lived at Lee's farm until the age of 29.  When Mr. Mayo passed away, he had a number of horses on his property that either needed to find homes quickly, or would be sent to auction.  Lee's daughter contacted us and we took four of the horses, Tiny being one of them.  She's a sweet girl with a lot of spunk and very easy to get along with.

Tiny would love to have a sponsor as a 31st birthday present

(Brite & Art)

Arturo First (Art)

(Capote (Seattle Slew) - Sh Bang (Dixieland Band))

Registered Thoroughbred gelding. 16.3 hands. Dark brown. No markings.

 Birth date: 04/12/1996

Art raced at Penn National and a variety of other racetracks before retiring due to "loose stifles".  I adopted Arturo before I planned on establishing our rescue and sanctuary.  Art has a great personality and loves to play "tag" with Levi, a nephew of one of our volunteers, Kelly.  Levi tags art by touching his nose or neck and waits for Art to touch him back.  It didn't take long for Art to figure out what this game consisted of, and they both enjoy playing when Levi visits.  I do ride Art occasionally, but for the most part, he's free to do whatever he wishes in the pasture with his buddies.

Brite Decision (Brite)

(High Brite - Early Decision)

Registered Thoroughbred gelding. 16.1 hands. Dark brown. No markings.

 Birth date: 03/10/1991

Brite inspired me to found this organization.  Originally, I was going to adopt two horses...one for myself to ride and one for my nephew, Ryan to ride.  We found Brite and Stretch at an adoption program in WV.  I worked for a major telecommunications company in corporate sales and had not planned to quit.  My original plan was to board the two horses near my home and remain near Pittsburgh with the company I was working for.  However, when I learned more about the plight of unwanted horses, and found out how desperate the situation was, I decided to sell my house and buy a farm to help more than just two horses.  Brite is one in a million and I don't say that lightly.  He is a true gem.  He'll baby-sit any horse I ask him to.  When we're in the barn, he knows what I want him to do before I ever ask.  It's not just a routine.  There's some level of innate communication between us.  There will never be another Brite.  Read more about Brite here.

Fast Market (Markie)

(Secretariat - Tina's Ten)

Registered Thoroughbred gelding. 15.3 hands. Chestnut. Star, stripe, two hind stockings, two front socks, cream spot on L hip.

 Birth date: 1989

Markie may be the last son of Secretariat to race.  The New Yorker Magazine did a four page feature story on Markie in Dec of 1996.  He has a tremendous resemblance to his sire, and a fantastic personality.  Markie won over a quarter million dollars in his career in Canada and the U.S.  His most noteable victory was a win in the Grade II Puss-N-Boots Stakes in Canada.

High Wind Shaiman (Shaiman)

Registered Egyptian Arabian stallion. 14 hands. Bay. Star.

 Birth year: 1975

Shaiman was on his way to slaughter in Canada when we stepped in and found him sanctuary with the help of Friends of Barbaro.  He is easy to handle & loves to be groomed.  He cannot be gelded due to his age, and it was very difficult to find a facility who would take care of him for us.  Shaiman is being boarded at Horse Feather Farms in Canastota, NY and taken very good care of by Sue and "Team Shaiman" (Thank you all very much!).  I don't know exactly how many caregivers Shaiman has, but he is probably one of the happiest horses there could be because of all of the TLC he received at Sue's.

Shaiman will most likely live the remainder of his life at Horse Feathers simply due to the fact that he is 33 years young, settled, and happy there. If we move him, we could risk stressing him to the point of medical issues that could be life threatening simply due to his age.

Shaiman has many angles watching over him and helping with his monthly care.  He does need additional sponsors though.  Shaiman's board is $200 per month.  We have secured pledges of $140 per month.  That leaves a balance of $60 per month we owe Horse Feather Farms to keep him there.  Please help us keep him safe.

Three sponsors at $20 each per month

Six sponsors each at $10 per month

Please consider joining Shaiman's Angels and help give this grand old man the dignified life he deserves to live for as many years as he desires
